Felling Trailers recently introduced the FT-30-3 I Drill Series trailer, which it built for a customer hauling a new heavier, wider drill.
The Sauk Centre MN trailer manufacturer has made trailers for the underground drill and trencher industry for many years, so when the dealer/customer informed a Felling salesperson a new, larger drill model was hitting the market, it went to work designing a trailer to transport the drill and its mud mix system.
Previous Felling models were limited by the tire capacities available for a two-axle configuration, Felling said, so the company’s engineering and sales teams drew up a three-axle model with the deck between the fenders in order to obtain the lowest deck height possible while making sure the trailer still would support electric or air brakes, depending on the end user’s needs.
In this design, Felling says it also incorporated options many utility customers require as standard, including an extended-hitch configuration that boasts approximately 30 inches of minimal tongue width as far back as the jack to allow a tighter turning radius.
“The hitch configuration allows a heavy-duty spring foot jack to be mounted on the outside of the hitch for easy jack operation, without reaching inside of the hitch to operate,” Felling maintained.
Also, narrower elevated water tank stands were designed with increased strength to allow the tank to mount a little farther over the fender, accommodating the wider drill, yet keeping the tank as low as possible, Felling claimed.
