Sherwin-Williams launches Powdura ECO coatings

April 16, 2020
New product platform features polyester resins comprised of 25% pre-consumer recycled plastic for sustainability

The General Industrial Division of Sherwin-Williams recently launched the first set of products from its Powdura ECO platform, which it says is the first line of powder coatings that uses a polyester resin comprised of 25% pre-consumer recycled plastic (rPET).

Powdura ECO powder coatings promote sustainability throughout the supply chain and help reduce plastic pollution, the company added.

“Manufacturers, no matter what industry we serve, are being held to higher sustainability standards, and for good reason,” said Tabitha McLeish, Sherwin-Williams global marketing director for general industrial. “It’s our collective responsibility to help contribute solutions to the ever-growing concern of plastic pollution.

“Powdura ECO demonstrates our commitment to bringing sustainable coating solutions to market.”

Each pound of TGIC and TGIC-free Powdura ECO coatings contain the equivalent of 16 16-ounce recycled plastic bottles. This fact, coupled with Powdura ECO products’ ability to meet or exceed existing powder coating performance standards, appeals to manufacturers and consumers looking to reduce their environmental footprint, Sherwin-Williams maintained.

“We know today’s consumer considers sustainability when making a purchase,” McLeish said. “Powdura ECO coatings enable manufacturers to differentiate their finished goods with recycled materials that don’t compromise performance. Powdura ECO coatings benefit all—our customers, their consumers and our planet.”

Powdura ECO coatings are suitable for interior and exterior environments, and various applications, including lawn equipment, transportation vehicles, consumer goods, electrical enclosures and fixtures. Powdura ECO coatings also can be customized to meet specification requirements. The coatings provide exceptional color retention and solvent resistance, and when compared to conventional polyester powders, may offer increased flexibility and impact resistance.

Available in a wide range of special effects, and color and gloss options, Powdura ECO products are easy to apply, have wide cure capability, and offer great light and weather fastness. They also can align with third-party certifications that define and measure sustainability standards, such as LEED, GreenGuard and BIFMA Level.

“Powder coatings have always offered benefits in line with sustainability, but Powdura ECO takes sustainability to the next level, which is why we’ll be rolling out additional products in the line in the near future,” McLeish said.
