Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) has agreed to introduce a Senate version of the Latham bill (H.R. 1137), possibly as early as next Monday, according to Pam O'Toole, executive director of the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers.

Brownback’s measure is a Senate version of the one Rep Tom Latham (R-IA) introduced in the House which would prohibit NHTSA from requiring manufacturers of trailers with gross vehicle weight ratings under 26,000 pounds to meet NHTSA’s Early Warning Requirements for “large manufacturers” as mandated by The TREAD Act.

“We agreed to assist Senator Brownback’s office in recruiting as many co-sponsors as possible,” O’Toole said. “However, you need to take action today or tomorrow. Please contact your Senators immediately and request that they contact Maggie Nelson, in Senator Brownback’s office and offer to co-sponsor this Senate bill. Her phone number is: (202) 224-6521.”

O’Toole invited those with questions about the issue to call the NATM office (785) 272-4433, or contact the Washington office of Kim Mann, the association’s legal counsel, at (202) 296-5003.
