Medium and heavy truck sales were up 14% in July over the same period a year ago and down 11% from last month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 38,968 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, up from July 2010 (34,175) and down from June 2011 (43,676).

Compared with July 2010, Class 8 trucks were up 31% (12,609, compared to 9,589). Class 7 sales were 3,379, up 10% from the 3,070 sold.

For the year, truck dealers have sold 265,292 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds, up 28% from 206,949 in 2010. Class 8 sales have been 84,677, a 44% increase from the same period last year (58,846). Class 7 sales have been up 12% (23,793, compared to 21,302). Total sales of all classes have been up 13%, from 3,430,907 to 3,877521.

Every class has been up, except for Class 4 (down 26%). The biggest increase has been in Class 5 (52%).
