Deliveries from Mack Trucks Inc through March 2001 totaled 6,933 vehicles, down 32% from the 10,184 units delivered during the same period in 2000.

In response to the declining market, Mack announced in March that it will reduce its workforce by some 700 positions, or about 12%, by the end of July. At the same time, the company also announced these rate reductions:

The Macungie (PA) Assembly Operations will reduce production gradually over the next several months, leading to a planned rate of 45 trucks per day in July, down from the current 62 trucks per day. The Winnsboro (SC) Assembly Operations plans to take “down weeks” the weeks of April 23, April 30, June 4, and June 25. Beyond this, production in Winnsboro has been reduced from 72 to 63 trucks per day effective April 9. The Hagerstown (MD) Powertrain Operations has reduced engine production from 186 to 165 per day, and transmission production from 39 to 23 a day, effective April 9.
