Donaldson Co Inc will provide 1,100 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved emissions control devices for the New York State Clean Air School Bus Program sponsored by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. The firm will work with 41 New York school districts to retrofit their buses with its Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) mufflers and Spiracle crankcase filter emission control devices.

The New York State Clean Air School Bus Program, authorized by the 1996 Clean Water/Clean Air Act, awarded $5 million to 74 school districts for retrofitting school buses to reduce emissions. This program recognizes projects that maximize environmental, energy, and economic benefits of emissions-reducing technology for diesel-powered school bus fleets and accelerating introduction of these technologies into the market.

Donaldson's “systems approach” to reducing emissions removes both tailpipe and crankcase emissions, eliminating up to 50% of total engine emissions. The system can be used in a range of school bus engines and will accommodate most fuels, including low- and ultra-low-sulfur diesel, as well as biodiesel.
