The average price for a gallon of diesel nationally dropped one cent to $2.596 for the week ending December 24, according to the Energy Information Administration.

New England, where the price went up 0.7 cents to $2.737, was the only region to experience an increase. The largest decline came in California, down 3.2 cents to $2.885, but the region remained the most expensive.

The Gulf Coast region, at $2.514 after a 0.5-cent decline, had the cheapest price.
