The field of view portion of the new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS 111 rear visibility regulation — applicable to vehicles with a 10,000-pound gross vehicle weight rating or less — phased in for altered vehicles starting May 1, 2017, with a field of view requirement. Full rear visibility conformance in the U.S. — which also includes requirements for image size, response time, deactivation, durability, default view and linger time — is required by May 1.
Conformance to the equivalent regulation in Canada is not required until 2019, and no phase-in period is included.
Who is affected?
• Truck equipment distributors and upfitters that upfit vehicles in gross vehicle weight ranges governed by the new regulation may need to install or relocate the rearview camera and make sure all other requirements are met.
• Fleet managers will want to understand the new regulation to monitor compliance with FMVSS 111 for their upfitted vehicles.
• Equipment manufacturers will want to better understand any design implications for truck-mounted equipment that may impact rearview camera placement and assist upfitter customers in their FMVSS 111 conformance responsibilities.
