MAUT-free insulated delivery truck avoids Autobahn toll

Feb 1, 2005 12:00 PM, By Paul Schenck

ANOTHER ENTRY in the MAUT-free competition to keep vehicle gross weight under 12 metric tonnes (26,460 lb) is this Schmitz 20-ft insulated body on the newly introduced Mercedes-Benz Atego 1222 LnR chassis. Highlight of the chassis is a new OM 924 LA four-cylinder engine with an increased displacement of 4.8 liters and rated at 218 hp. It weighs about 100 kg (220 lb) less than a comparable six-cylinder engine. The chassis is about 450 kg (990 lb) lighter, and the frame height is 73 mm (3") lower. With a wheelbase of 4220 mm (166"), it rides on 245/70R 17.5" duals.

The Schmitz 20-ft body has Ferroplast body panels of steel skins and a polyurethane core. Inside length is 6050 mm (238") and width is 2460 mm (97"). Inside height is 2500 mm (98"). It is equipped with a Zepro tailgate lift behind the rear swing doors. Refrigeration is provided by a Thermo King TS-300 electric drive unit. This gives the body an ATP rating of FRC for frozen foods transport.

Maximum payload is about 4,600 kg (10,120 lb) to stay under the 12 tonnes (26,460 lb) GVW and thus be free of the new toll system for trucks on the autobahns. Schmitz Cargobull AG, Bahnhofstrasse 22, D-48612 Horstmar, Germany.
