Lift truck operators must be trained, certified

Dec 1, 2002 12:00 PM

As part of the new powered industrial lift truck operator training regulation introduced by Occupational Safety & Health Administration 29 CFR 1910.178, forklift operators must be trained, evaluated, and certified before operating any powered industrial lift trucks.

Employers are now to provide training for each lift truck operator regardless of their prior experience or safe driving record. Written proof that each operator has successfully completed a site and equipment specific training program are to be kept on file for when onsite inspections are conducted. Failure to comply with this new regulation can result in fines up to $70,000 per violation.

A train-the-trainer program has been developed for individuals with experience and knowledge of lifting equipment used at their location. Upon successful completion of this course, attendees will return qualified to train, evaluate, and certify other employees assigned to operate lift trucks at their workplace.

Dates and locations for upcoming courses in 2003 are:

  • January 21, Arlington Convention Center, Dallas/Fort Worth TX

  • January 22, Radisson Hotel Astrodome Convention Center, Houston TX

  • January 23, Henry B Gonzales Convention Center, San Antonio TX

Class size is limited to ensure maximum teacher-student interaction, and registration forms are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Phone 888-683-8007 for further details and registration.
