Commander II ready for all emergencies

Jun 1, 2004 12:00 PM

Seagrave Fire Apparatus' new Commander II chassis improves on its predecessor, the Commander. The Commander II cab is roomier, with 6" added to the overall cab length, and provides generous seating conditions and a more spacious ride for firefighters in turnout gear. The extra length adds 13.5 more cubic feet to the crew area, which accommodates All Belts to Seat (ABTS) rear seating. The cab's front door is redesigned for better ingress/egress and has a larger step-in surface that's 3" longer than the previous Commander. Both crew doors and their step-in surface are widened by 3.88".

The output heating/cooling/ventilation system has been redesigned. The rear heater is increased to 29,000 Btu per hour, and an additional front floor heater boosts available front heat from 30,000 to 74,000 Btu.

Each of the six side windows have gained 4.25" vertically, with visibility through 860 cubic inches of additional glass area.

For more durability, the Commander II provides a three-point radiator mounting. The improved chassis has a drop center section frame rail measuring 12.25" deep to add frame stiffness and greater section modulus, which will deliver both a better ride and durability. Redesigned axle stops consisting of a high-durometer elastomer material on both front and rear axles enhance ride smoothness and reduce shock load to the springs, chassis, and body.

To accommodate the 2004 Detroit Diesel Series 60 EGR engine, a new radiator and charged air cooler package has been developed. Longer-life belts with auto-tensioners, high-efficiency engine cooling fan, and an enclosed engine air tunnel from the front grille to the front of the radiator are all standard in the new engine cooling package.
