With publication in The Federal Register July 13, greenhouse gas regulation of trailers and work trucks is now an official notice of proposed rulemaking.

The public has until September 11 to comment on the proposal, which regulates most medium and heavy-duty trucks and trailers.

The rulemaking, a joint project of the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, includes the key features that regulators have been telling industry groups.  If adopted as proposed, the regulations will be phased in gradually, beginning with the 2018 model year.  The regulations would be fully implemented in 2027, becoming more stringent with time and incorporating new technologies that are not currently on the market.

Trailers and work trucks, as expected, are included in the proposed regulation.  For a PDF of the proposed regulation, click here:  Greenhouse gas proposal.
