CIMC acquires Irish trailer manufacturer

June 27, 2016

CIMC Vehicles, a China-based global trailer manufacturer, has completed its acquisition of Retlan Manufacturing Limited.

The Retlan Group includes SDC Trailers based in Toomebridge, Northern Ireland.  SDC manufactures a variety of trailers, including vans, curtainsiders, dumps, platforms, and container chassis.

The Retlan Group has 950 employees.  The company had sales of £198 million for latest financial year. Established in Toomebridge, Northern Ireland in 1978, SDC has expanded its trailer manufacturing business into Europe. The Retlan Group has production plants at Toomebridge and Antrim in Northern Ireland and Mansfield in England.

“We are delighted to have acquired the Retlan Group,” said David Li, general manager and director of the board of CIMC Vehicles.  “We look forward to working with the existing management to continue its tradition of high quality UK-based manufacturing and to the opportunity for further investment to help grow the business.”

CIMC Vehicles, founded in 2002, manufactures trailers in Continental Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia, Australia and Africa.  The company is a subsidiary of CIMC Group based in Shenzhen with sales in excess of $10 billion and almost 70,000 employees.

In September SDC will again exhibit at the IAA show in Hanover.  The company’s KERS trailer has been nominated for the European Trailer of the year 2016.
