Trailer orders fall, but backlogs growing

Net orders for U.S. trailers orders were off 9% during May, the second consecutive monthly decline for the industry, according to figures compiled by ACT Research of Columbus, Indiana.
Despite the decline, commercial trailer backlogs continued to grow, ending the month at 102,500 units, up 1% from April, according to ACT. ACT also noted that build was up 87% from May 2010, while industry backlog was up 122% for the same time period.
“The decline in April net orders was actually in line with what would be expected from normal industry patterns,” says Frank Maly, the company’s director of commercial vehicle transportation analysis and research. “The order board continues to appear solid, as supported by extremely low order cancellations. Fleets have taken their positions in OEMs’ production plans and, so far, are maintaining those commitments.”
