German trailer manufacturer builds 250,000th axle

Schmitz Cargobull has reported that more than 250,000 of its trailer axle have been manufactured since they were designed and developed in-house in 2005.

"When production began in 2005, the plan was to equip approximately 30 to 40 trailers per week with the new axle," said Olaf Schütte, head of production at Schmitz Cargobull. "But the demand rapidly increased to up to 90 axles for 20 to 30 trailers per day."

Schmitz now installs its own axles on 60-70% of all the trailers it manufactures.

"The running gear has a significant influence on both maintenance costs and fleet uptime for operators, so the manufacturing process must undergo constant, strict quality auditing,” Schütte says. “We ensure that all wheel bearings, brake discs, brake calipers, pneumatic suspension components and shock absorbers are delivered by world-class manufacturers."
