CHEREAU designs directional chassis

CHEREAU chassis are specifically designed for refrigerated transport, and they also contribute in various other ways to the overall quality of the equipment.

First, with its 2,090-mm track and 7,700-mm wheelbase, a standard CHEREAU three-axle chassis gives superior road holding and thus greater safety. Thick structural rails (assembled with a double weld on each side of the web) offer increased structural longevity and rigidity. Each of the rear protective bumpers is built into a holding section and, like the Bumper-C, are independent of the chassis structure. This concept leads to lower maintenance costs and makes the equipment more durable. Finally, the rigidity of the chassis, combined with that of the bodywork, allows unrestricted installation of auxiliary equipment such as side doors.

Maintaining this same overall design, CHEREAU introduces a new directional chassis. Steering-C has been specially developed for refrigerated semitrailers, from one to three axles, primarily used for urban or peri-urban distribution.

The Steering-C is a chassis whose last axle is directional. It is mechanically controlled by the hauler's fifthwheel.

The directional system, long proven on other chassis, consists of a coupling section/pivot and a mounting plate on the directional axle. These two components are connected by a transmission shaft. The coupling section is equipped with a coupling pivot and a fifthwheel cone, which automatically locks into the hauler fifthwheel during coupling. When the hauler negotiates a curve, the crown plate is driven by the fifthwheel cone and transmits the turning motion to the axle via a steering shaft.

Thanks to this simple and robust transmission, the turning motion is transmitted in a direct manner, and the system has no play. Thus, ruts and other factors have no negative impact on the vehicle stability. The directional system of the Steering-C chassis controls the semitrailer in both forward and reverse.

The design of the Steering-C chassis also allows the use of equipment previously difficult, or even impossible, to mount on this type of chassis. These include, among other accessories: a 250L refrigeration unit reservoir, a 36-Euro palette carrier, wraparound wings conforming to European regulations, centralized lubrication, and and the entire range of Chéreau rears (with underride guard, Bumper-C, tailgates).
