Volvo engine gets EPA approval

Volvo Trucks North America Inc. today announced that it has received permission from EPA to manufacture and sell trucks with its October 2002-compliant VED12 diesel engine. “We believe this engine meets all applicable emissions requirements of the Clean Air Act, EPA’s regulations, and the terms of your consent decree,” the agency said in a letter to Volvo. The agency issued Volvo a conditional certificate, with final certification expected once EPA completes its formal review process. Volvo previously announced deals to sell trucks with the new engines to Tyson Foods, U.S. Xpress and Knight Transportation. Starting tomorrow, engine makers can sell only heavy-duty truck diesel engines that meet the new EPA emissions standards: 2.5-grams oxides of nitrogen (NOx) plus non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC).
