Truck transport business hits $198 billion in 2002: census report

The truck transportation industry had revenues of $198 billion in 2002 compared to $197 billion in 2001, according to statistics just released by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The report, “2002 Service Annual Survey: Truck Transportation, Couriers and Messengers, and Warehousing and Storage,” also noted:
- General freight trucking made up 68 percent of all trucking revenues with $136 billion in 2002. Trucks transporting specialized freight needing flatbeds, tankers or refrigerated trailers accounted for $62 billion.
- Local general freight trucking revenues were $24 billion in 2002 about the same as in 2002.
- Long Distance general freight trucking revenues were $113 billion in 2002 compared to $110 billion, a drop of about 2 percent.
- Warehousing and storage brought in $15.3 billion in 2002 up from $13.3 billion a year earlier.
