Truck sales up 10% over December 2001

Franchised dealers of U.S. truck manufacturers sold 774,659 units in December 2002 –- an increase of 10.9% over the month a year ago, according to data published by Ward's Communications.

For the year ending Dec. 31, 2002, franchised dealers of U.S. truck manufacturers sold 8,072,136 units -- 1.2% below sales for the year 2001.

Class 8 sales were up 4.6% for the year (146,031, compared to 139,614). In the final two quarters, there was only one month when the Class 8 sales for 2002 were less than for the same month in 2001. That came in December, a 5.4% drop.

The biggest increase for the year was seen in Class 6 (6.3%), while the biggest drop was in Class 4 (27.3%).
