Swift Transportation orders new Volvo VN tractors

Volvo Trucks North America, Inc. today announced that Swift Transportation in Phoenix, Arizona, has placed an order for 50 Volvo VN tractors to be delivered early in the second quarter of this year.

The 50 Volvo VN670 tractors will go into Swift's fleet for service on dedicated, high-mileage routes. The tandem axle VN670s are equipped with Cummins ISX engines rated at 400 hp.

The VN670 delivers for fleets looking for superior efficiency and productivity, combined with a modern, ergonomic driver's environment and a spacious, comfortable sleeper. And, of course, each VN demonstrates Volvo's 75-year commitment to safety through its high visibility design, high-strength steel cab and many other features.

"Volvo Trucks is very pleased to welcome Swift Transportation as a new customer and we think this represents the beginning of a fruitful relationship for both companies," said Scott Kress, Volvo Trucks senior vice president/sales. "Swift is a leader and innovator in the trucking industry. Its record of sustained growth through the last decade is a testament to its ability to understand and meet the needs of its customers. We here at Volvo look forward to bringing that same customer focus to our relationship with Swift."

Jerry Moyes, chief executive officer of Swift, said, "We are excited to start testing the new Volvo VN as well as the Cummins ISX. The industry and our company are at a crossroads for purchasing new equipment due to the new EPA'02 engine requirements. We will replace nearly 16,000 units currently in service over the next four years, plus buy for future growth. We need to evaluate the options available now or in the near future to make the best and most cost-effective purchasing decision as we go forward."
