Stewart & Stevenson awarded contract extension

Stewart & Stevenson's contract with the Army has been extended for another year at a value of $396 million, meaning that the company will continue to build trucks and trailers at its Sealy, Texas, plant through September 2004. Between October 2003 and September 2004, Stewart & Stevenson's Teactical Vehicle segment will build about 2,300 trucks with 2.5-ton and 5-ton capabilities, in addition to 500 trailers. According to president and CEO Michael Grimes, this is roughly the same amount that are being built now. The trucks are part of a family of military vehicles that could be used as troop carriers, cargo haulers, wreckers, or tankers carrying water or fuel. The company has delivered over 18,000 to the Army in the past decade.
