A Merry-Go-Round for Trucks?

Jul 20, 2001 12:00 PM

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has requested comments on the agency’s plans to evaluate driving maneuver tests to determine rollover resistance for light-duty vehicles. The testing is required under the TREAD Act passed by Congress last year.

The announcement was made in the July 3 issue of The Federal Register. Among the possible techniques is the “centrifuge test” in which the light-duty truck, SUV, or other vehicle is placed on what amounts to a merry-go-round and rotated until two wheels come off the surface.

Comments are due August 17. Refer to Docket No NHTSA—2001—6859.
