Mack Trucks Deliveries Decline through March

Deliveries from Mack Trucks, Inc. through March 2001 totaled 6,933 vehicles, down 32 percent from the 10,184 units delivered during the same period last year.

The North American market was off 34% from 2000, Mack says. However, deliveries were up sharply in South America (189 trucks for the period, compared with 49 a year ago).

“The North American downturn continues to present serious challenges to every truck manufacturer,” said Mack President & CEO Michel Gigou. “But we believe our cost reduction plan, combined with aggressive sales efforts, will keep Mack in a competitive position.”

In response to the declining market, Mack announced last month that it will reduce its workforce by approximately 700 positions, or about 12 percent, by the end of July. At the same time, the company also announced the following rate reductions:

The Macungie (PA) Assembly Operations will gradually reduce production over the next several months, leading to an ultimate planned rate of 45 trucks per day in July, down from the current 62 trucks per day. The Winnsboro (SC) Assembly Operations will take “down weeks” on the weeks of April 23, April 30, June 4 and June 25, in addition to the previously announced down weeks of March 26 and April 2. Beyond this, production in Winnsboro will be reduced from 72 to 63 trucks per day effective April 9. The Hagerstown (MD) Powertrain Operations will reduce engine production from 186 to 165 per day, and transmission production from 39 to 23 a day, effective April 9.
