Intra, TRW partner to supply Volvo Trucks, other OEMs

Intra Technologies and TRW Automotive Electronics & Components GmbH & Co. KG have signed a long-term supply agreement for a new vehicle door-control module that is currently standard on several Volvo Truck AB vehicle platforms, and may soon be implemented on other Volvo platforms as well as with other OEMs.

The module is the primary controller for the vehicle windows, mirrors, and door locks, and is much more compact and cost efficient, relative to features and performance, than controllers currently used in most trucks.

The Door Control Module was designed by Intra and will be produced by TRW, which will be the Tier One supplier for Volvo and any other customers that may be interested in purchasing the product.

"We have been working on this unit with TRW for the past two years," said Intra President Aly Jetha. "Our expertise in DC power microcontrollers was needed because the physical size requirements of the product were much smaller than anything available at the time. TRW is an ideal partner to launch the product because of their ability to manufacture the units in high volume at low cost."

They have a unique competency in designing things that are much smaller than conventional methods," said Trevor Stewart, Director of Product Engineering for TRW. "Overall, the design and development process was quite smooth and relatively swift in terms of designing and implementing product in this industry. We look forward to partnering with Intra on future projects."

TRW is actively looking for other OEM customers for the controller and eventually expects to supply it to a number of North American and European truck manufacturers.
