Ford Approves Fontaine for High-Rail Installations

Apr 18, 2001 12:00 PM

The Fontaine Truck Equipment operation in Louisville KY has recently been authorized to install rail adaptive equipment on a shipthrough basis.

With the approval from Ford Modified Vehicle Engineering, the Fontaine operation can now equip Ford Super Duty vehicles to operate on railroad tracks in addition to streets and highways.

The approval process took over 18 months to complete. Fontaine utilized a certified independent test center to assist the company in conducting multiple test sequences. Three different vehicles were crash tested in order to prove that trucks equipped with the high-rail gear could still comply with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Fontaine features Mitchell Equipment’s Flexiride ® railgear, which spans the entire Ford Super Duty lineup. The Mitchell gear features a choice of either manual or automatic controls and includes a patented wheel adapter system that accommodates standard Ford disc rims.
