Diesel price reaches three-month high

After weeks of virtually no change, the retail price of a gallon of diesel rose 1.5 cents to $1.453 for the week ending Aug. 4. It was the highest national average price since May 5. Truckers are now paying nearly 15 cents more per gallon than they did a year ago. Prices rose the most in California, increasing 2.2 cents to $1.695. Analysts with the U.S. Department of Energy said U.S. crude inventories fell last week despite the arrival of Iraqi oil for the first time since May. Problems with Alaskan oil production were blamed. Prices remained cheapest along the Gulf Coast, where diesel costs less than $1.40 per gallon.
