City takes over trailer plant

Trailmobile Trailer LLC has surrendered possession of its Liberal, Kansas, trailer manufacturing plant, according to Toby Miller, city manager of Liberal.

Miller said the company turned the facility over to the city September 12 following default of its lease.

“We are looking for another tenant,” Miller said. “The facility could be used for other applications, but it is a state-of-the-art refrigerated trailer manufacturing plant.”

Miller recognized the difficulties facing trailer manufacturers in the current market. He pointed out that state and local incentives are available.

Trailmobile opened the $22 million facility in 1999. It includes a 235,000-sq-ft building on a 50-acre site. Sid Kulec, former executive vice-president for Trailmobile, has been retained by Liberal to maintain the plant and equipment.
