Americans' Total Mileage in 1999 Equals 14,000 Roundtrips to the Sun

Americans' total annual driving mileage in 1999 equaled 14,000 roundtrips to the sun - a total of 2.6 trillion miles, according to Automotive Industry Status Report 2000 from the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA). That's an annual average of 12,816 miles per vehicle.

The number of miles Americans drive each year has nearly doubled since 1980 - from just under 1.5 trillion in 1980 to 2.6 trillion in 1999.
