Truck sales down 27% in May

Retail sales of Class 3-8 trucks were off 27% in May, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.
Truck dealers sold 46,078 Class 3-8 trucks for the month, compared with 62,888 a year earlier. Class 8 trucks led the decline, dropping 52% from May 2006 levels.
Despite reduced sales overall, some GVW classes posted gains during May. Class 3 trucks were up 3% for the month, and Class 4 models edged up 5%.
Through the first five months of 2007, dealers sold 231,289 Class 3-8 trucks, down 33% from the corresponding period of 2006.
