Schmitz aims for 100,000 trailers a year

Jul 3, 2008 11:03 AM

Coming off a record year in which Schmitz Cargobull AG saw production increase 30% and sales jump 27%, the German trailer manufacturer has set its sights on producing 100,000 trailers annually.

The company, headquartered in Horstmar, Germany, now has nine manufacturing plants in Europe. The facilities combined to produce more than 66,500 trailers during the company’s 2007/2008 fiscal year. Overall production rate was more than 350 trailers per day.

Speaking at a press conference held in advance of this fall’s IAA show in Hanover, Germany, Schmitz chairman Bernd Hoffman said the firm’s next strategic goal is to produce 100,000 vehicles annually and to have sales of more than €3 billion. Most recently the company had sales of approximately €2.14 billion, up from €1.685 billion a year ago.

Hoffman says economic growth continues to drive demand throughout Europe. In the new European Union, economic growth is keeping the transport industry busy. Russia's economy in particular, along with those of bordering former Soviet republics, is growing rapidly, in part due to very high oil and gas-based income.
