Peterbilt Motors Co. is officially retiring the Model 379 from its tractor lineup at the end of this year, replacing it with the Model 389 starting in January 2007.

Introduced nearly 20 years ago, the Model 379 will retire in style. The final 1,000 units produced will get a special “Legacy Class Edition” designation. This includes: emblems on the grille and both sides of the cab; a custom dash plate inscribed with the production number of the vehicle, from one to 1,000; a polished aluminum hood centerline; premium seats embroidered with the Legacy Class Edition emblem; and a platinum oval package which includes a punched oval-pattern grille and air cleaner intake screen, polished grille bars and stainless steel sunvisor.

Peterbilt noted that the Model 379 Legacy Class Edition will be limited to the extended-hood, 127-in. BBC configuration. It will be available as a day cab or with a full range of sleepers and can still be configured to customer specifications regarding drivetrain, axles, suspensions and other components.

Dan Sobic, Peterbilt’s gm, said that these last Model 379s will all come equipped with ’06 engines.

“We’re allowed to build trucks equipped with ’06 engines right up to the end of the year, Dec. 31 to be exact,” he said. “We’re also allowed some spillover into ’07 as many of these trucks won’t be delivered until next year. About 50% of these Legacy Edition trucks are going to be equipped with Cummins-brand engines, while the rest are going to get Caterpillar models."
