The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has granted a temporary exemption from Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 224 (rear impact protection) for certain gravity-feed dump body trailers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has granted a temporary exemption from Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 224 (rear impact protection) for certain gravity-feed dump body trailers.

This exemption is based on the agency's determination that compliance with FMVSS No. 224 “would cause substantial economic hardship to a manufacturer that has tried to comply in good faith with the standard, and that such an exemption is consistent with the public interest.”

Columbia’s exemption will be limited to 210 dump body trailers over the next three years. Columbia Body must affix certification labels to the exempted trailers stating they have been exempted from FMVSS No. 224.

The subject vehicles manufactured by Columbia Body are exempted until March 7, 2019.
