Lights out: NTEA forced to pull plug on conference

Sept. 13, 2016

The National Truck Equipment Association was forced to cancel the annual Truck Product Conference following a power outage at the hotel where the event was to take place.

The hotel maintenance staff struggled throughout the day to repair catastrophic failures in the building’s electrical system.  Power came on multiple times as repairmen attempted to fix the problem, only to have the hotel return to total darkness as breakers tripped.  The electricity continued to go off and on for about four hours after NTEA canceled the event.  It was after 9 p.m. before the power was finally restored.

According to NTEA staff, the association attempted to relocate the conference to another venue, but no other location was available that had enough hotel rooms, banquet capacity, and exhibit space to accommodate an event the size of the NTEA Truck Product Conference.

“We deeply regret this inconvenience and loss of opportunity,” said Steve Carey, executive director of NTEA. “The hotel had not been able to resolve the issue and was unable to predict when it would be fully functional. All event registration fees will be reimbursed. Please contact NTEA with any questions or concerns regarding this cancelation at (800) 441-6832. At this time, there is no rescheduled date for the event. Thank you for your understanding.”

The conference had been scheduled for September 13-15, 2016.

The hotel building opened in 1976 as a Hyatt Regency and has been the home for the Truck Product Conference for all but the early years the conference has been held.  It became the Edward Village Hotel this past spring.
