Iraq war is keeping Stewart & Stevenson busy

Stewart & Stevenson has responded to the Army’s request for armored vehicles in Iraq by tripling production of its heavily fortified truck cabs, according to the Houston Chronicle.
The company’s plant in Sealy, Texas, is producing five hardened cabs a day and early next year plans to begin assembling 15 a day with an angled design that makes them more difficult for radars to detect.
To handle the increased demand, Stewart & Stevenson plans to add a second line, multiple shifts and up to 50 workers. When the company is producing 15 cabs a day, it will process 1.2 million pounds of armor metal each month -- an 800,0000-pound increase.
The company has built more than 26,000 trucks for the Army since the Gulf War.
