Retail truck sales up 17.8%

Franchised dealers of United States truck manufacturers sold 864,277 units in September -- a 17.8% increase over the same month a year ago, when 733,411 were sold --according to data published by Ward's Communications.

The biggest increases were seen in Class 8 (44.5%) and Class 4 (43.1%). Every class showed a gain, with the smallest coming in Class 7 (2.1%).

Year-to-date sales were up 5.4%, with 8,362,485, compared to 6,987,326, with Class 6 (up 46.6%) and Class 8 (up 43.1%) showing the biggest gains.
