Peterbilt reveals '07 testing, pricing plans

LOUISVILLE, KY. As Peterbilt Motors Co. enters the final phase of its 2007 emissions testing, it says the cost impact of new emissions control technology will add $6,000 to $9,000 to the base sticker price of its Class 8 products, and $2,000 to $4,000 to the medium-duty lineup.
"The reason we are only giving a range of possible price increases is because we still don't have the final pricing from our engine partners on the total cost of their emissions control package, which includes diesel particulate filters (DPF)," said Dan Sobic, Peterbilt's gm, during a press conference here at the Mid-America Trucking Show.
He added that Peterbilt plans to start talking to customers about final '07 pricing within the next 90 days. Meanwhile, Landon Sproull, chief engineer for Peterbilt, said the company will start the third and final phase of its '07 field tests this May using "production-line built" engines, DPFs, and other components.
"We've been running '07 field tests since late last year and we now have about 100 of our own 2007-complaint trucks out with customers across all applications," Sproull told FleetOwner. "We've also been able to use a lot more ultra-low-sulfur fuel in recent testing to get a more accurate picture of '07 performance results. So far, we're very comfortable with the performance and fuel economy results we're seeing."
