TerraStar adds new features

International is adding a series of new features to its Class 4-5 TerraStar chassis during the fourth quarter of 2011.
INTERNATIONAL launched the TerraStar with minimum specs and then added new features. Those new features became available in the fourth quarter, according to Paul Schunke.
The Allison 1000 Series six-speed transmission
The30k GCW Allison 1000 Series transmission
Air-assist-powered park brake
Sheppard 50-degree steering gear
Driver-controlled locking differential
Split-bench seating with center console
Aluminum step package
Also coming during the fourth quarter of 2011 is a premium appearance package that includes a chrome grille, chrome headlight surround, and painted fender extensions.
The all-wheel drive version of the TerraStar is coming late next year. It will include 7500/8500-pound front-drive axle, 5.13 and 4.56 gear ratios, and manual locking hubs. The frame rail is designed to 33,000 lbs GVWR.
TerraStar's power comes from the all-new 300-hp MaxxForce 7, an engine purpose-built for medium duty. It also features MaxxForce Advanced EGR, the only no-hassle, no-liquid-urea solution for 2010 emissions. It has a Diamond Logic electrical system, with optional pre-programmed features like pre-trip inspections, headlights on with wipers, and safety interlocks.
On the WorkStar, visibility was a high-priority item.
“On the medium-duty diesel truck, we essentially took the DuraStar hood and cooling module and put it on the WorkStar MRD chassis,” Schunke said.
There is a sloped-nose high visibility hood on the heavy-duty diesel truck. Pilot builds began in September, and it will be available in March.
The 7600 SFA 6x6 began production in November and has a Fabco 18k front axle, Fabco TC270 T-case, and Allison transmission. Expanded offerings include a Fabco 21k axle, Fabco TC-180 T-case, and a new step package.
Natural gas is available. The 5HP/torque ratings are for 210 to 300 hp with the Allison 3000 Series. There are multiple DGE fuel tank configurations (back of cab, frame-mounted).
Production begins in December.
On the PayStar, MaxxForce engines are available in the 5500 and 5600 models. A tridem axle configuration is available. The 5900 models include an aluminum cab configuration, and a tridem axle configuration is available.
Schunke said the Bendix ATR-6 virtually eliminates corrosion issues with its internal valve system. The MPM composite oil pan with heater further prolongs the life of the oil pan because the plastic absorbs and dissipates energy when small road debris hits the finish; and the inside plastic layer acts as a protective barrier for the layer outside of it in the event that the steel layer rusts.
He said MaxxForce 11/13 models have a release service hatch that will be available on the floor for the REPTO. It will provide a 6x6 inch opening in the transmission cover.
There are four engine platforms for International, from the MaxxForce 7 (V8, 6.4L, 220-300 hp) to the MaxxForce 15 (15L, 435-550 hp). The MaxxForce 15 becomes available in 9900 SFA in December and will be offered in the ProStar+.
The MaxxForce 15 completes the broadest, most comprehensive lineup of integrated truck-engine offerings available to North American commercial truck customers.
Engineered specifically for International's Class 8 heavy-duty on-highway trucks, the engine is available with up to 500 hp and 1850 lb-ft of torque and is the most powerful engine Navistar builds (International PayStar heavy-duty vocational trucks are available with MaxxForce 15 up to 550 hp). The engine is designed to handle the most extreme demands that customers require.
The MaxxForce 15 has the fuel and air systems of the MaxxForce Advanced EGR system. Peak torque is achieved at 1000 rpm and holds steady to 1600 rpm, which reduces gear-shifting needs uphill and allows for shifting at lower speeds when accelerating. Durability is enhanced with a four-bolt connecting rod design. The four-bolt design assures the clamping force and rigidity required for extreme loads and terrain, for which the MaxxForce 15 is designed.
The MaxxForce 15 joins the MaxxForce 11 and 13 engines that are already part of the product line. The MaxxForce 11 and 13 offer options such as the MaxxForce Engine Brake by Jacobs as well as programmable electronic parameters for increased fuel economy and fleet maintenance. The MaxxForce is now offered with up to 500 hp and available for order in the International LoneStar.
All 2011 International brand commercial trucks for the North American market are powered by MaxxForce engines with MaxxForce Advanced EGR emissions technology. Navistar has pursued its in-cylinder emissions solution path for the past decade. With MaxxForce Advanced EGR, customers won't have the worry or inconvenience of finding and filling liquid urea.
NTEA members inspect the engine compartment of the TerraStar chassis cab. The diesel-powered truck does not use SCR and does not use diesel exhaust fluid to meet emissions regulations.
