SME video explores basic extrusion processes

Mar 1, 2005 12:00 PM

Extrusion Processes, the latest video addition to the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Fundamental Manufacturing Processes series, is an introduction to extrusion processes and a training tool for the shop floor or classroom.

This program explores basic metal extrusion and plastic extrusion. See shop floor footage with animations to help learn how materials are transformed into extrusions. Discover the use of metal and plastic extrusion in different industries. Concepts and terms explained include force capacity, extrusion speed, extrusion ratio, breakthrough force, viscous fluid, drag flow, and nip roll.

The metal extrusion segment of the program explains hot, warm, and cold metal extrusion applications and the common metals used in each process. Learn how direct extrusion competes with other fabrication methods.

The plastic extrusion segment explores the two principal plastic extrusion processes: profile extrusion and blown-film extrusion. This segment explores the cycle of plastic extrusion in detail, from start to finish. Using animation, the program lets the viewer follow thermoplastic pellet material as it is transformed into a molten viscous fluid and channeled through the screw extruder and die to produce various shapes and profiles.

This 21-minute video has separate order codes for VHS (VT04PUB12-4849) and DVD (DV04PUB12-4849) versions. Price for SME non-members is $255; members pay $229.
