Cummins Unveils Electronic Four-Cylinder

Nov 1, 2000 12:00 PM, TRAILER/BODY BUILDERS STAFF

Cummins Inc introduced a four-cylinder ISB engine for the light- and medium-duty truck market at the American Trucking Associations (ATA) Management Conference & Exhibition in San Diego recently. This ISB is Cummins' first fully electronic four-cylinder medium-duty engine and initially will only be available for a walk-in van chassis. The company says the 16-valve design can combine up to 170 horsepower with a 20% to 30% increase in fuel efficiency.

Maggie Mayall, medium-duty product manager for Cummins, said fleet managers will notice marked improvements in fuel economy and uptime, while drivers will see increased performance and reduced noise. The new engine block features a rear-mounted gear housing, fuel pump, and accessory drive, which Mayhill said contributes to reduced running noise.
