Used Truck Sales Down in January: ACT

Feb 26, 2013 11:06 AM

Used Class 8 truck sales volumes in January were down 3% year-over-year and 6% month-over-month, according to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research.

“While one data point does not make a trend, longer-term softness is in line with expectations, as new truck buyers have held onto their equipment longer before trading. The net effect is older, higher mileage trucks, which translates into lower prices,” said Steve Tam, Vice President-Commercial Vehicle Sector with ACT. “It is now a buyers’ market.”

The report from ACT provides data on the average used price for the top-selling Class 8 model for each of the major truck OEMs – Freightliner (Daimler); Kenworth and Peterbilt (Paccar); International (Navistar); and Volvo and Mack (Volvo).
