Truck Fuel Efficiency Rule Being Reviewed by White House

The White House Office of Management and Budget is now reviewing rules that were jointly developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to implement the first-ever fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction rules for medium- and heavy-duty trucks.
A notice of proposed rulemaking with a draft version of the rule had been published for public comment. The National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) and its affiliate division, the Green Truck Association, both prepared and submitted comments on the proposal.
As originally drafted, the rules would cut emissions from large trucks by 7–20% by 2017, depending on the size and use of the truck. The NTEA has been heavily involved in this rulemaking process, beginning with the underlying legislation authorizing it in 2007. The draft rules recognize a number of NTEA concerns regarding the use and manufacture of work trucks.
An announcement on the final rule is expected by the end of July.
