Oshkosh plans to build another 1,084 HEMTT A4s

Apr 1, 2008 12:00 PM

Oshkosh Corporation received a contract modification from the United States Army to the current family of heavy tactical vehicles (FHTV) contract, ordering the manufacture of 1,084 heavy expanded mobility tactical trucks (HEMTT) in the A4 configuration.

This contract modification raises the total of Oshkosh HEMTT A4s under contract to 1,745, for a total contract modification of more than $321 million. The Oshkosh HEMTT A4 production will begin in July 2008.

An original contract modification was awarded Feb. 1, 2008, while the second modification designated the vehicle models to be manufactured as HEMTT A4s. The Oshkosh Defense Group will continue to manufacture product-improved HEMTT A2s until the A4 upgrades take effect in July. The most recent improvements to the HEMTT A2 are a fully air-conditioned cab and cab structural changes that make installation of add-on-armor in the field quicker and easier.

The HEMTT's 13-ton payload and off-road capabilities make it the backbone for the U.S. Army's logistics fleet. Since its introduction in 1985, the HEMTT has helped keep the Army on the move during major conflicts such as Operations Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom.
