NTEA Expects Mandatory Fuel-Efficiency Standards by 2016 MY

The National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) expects that the proposed fuel-efficiency standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks and work trucks would be mandatory by model year (MY) 2016, but voluntary compliance would be allowed for MY 2014 and 2015.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has sent draft truck fuel economy regulations to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review. President Obama's May 21, 2010, Presidential Memorandum Regarding Fuel Efficiency Standards also calls for standards consistent with what the Energy Independence Security Act of 2007 (EISA) calls for.
If the OMB does not call for NHTSA to alter the proposed regulations, NHTSA could publish a notice of proposed rulemaking in the Federal Register before the end of the year.
