More Layoffs at Freightliner’s Gastonia Plant

Aug. 5, 2016
Freightliner announced another round of layoffs at its Gastonia parts and logistics plant, with 115 employees who will be temporarily let go effective Aug. 12, according to the Gaston Gazette.

Freightliner announced another round of layoffs at its Gastonia parts and logistics plant, with 115 employees who will be temporarily let go effective Aug. 12, according to the Gaston Gazette.

This year, a total of 295 workers have been cut from the plant, knocking the number of employees down to about 1,000, according to the report. In June, the truck maker announced it would lay off nearly 800 workers in Gaston County, NC, as part of an international reduction in workforce – 600 workers at its Mount Holly plant and 200 at Gastonia.

Freightliner owner Daimler Trucks North America expects fewer orders to build trucks, the corporation's stated reason for the layoffs. The company reports that it expects a 15-percent decrease in retail sales for medium- to heavy-duty trucks. The Mount Holly manufacturing plant makes medium-duty trucks.

“These workforce adjustments are expected to be temporary, and workers will have first rights to be recalled when production is able to sustain a higher build rate,” Giroux said.
