Medium and Heavy Truck Sales Up 30%

Medium and heavy truck sales were up 30% in May over the same period a year ago and up 9% over the previous month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 31,285 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, up from May 2009 (23,998) and up from April 2010 (28,618).

Compared with May 2009, Class 8 trucks were up 14% (7,895). Class 6 experienced a 136% increase (3,071).

Through the first five months of 2010, truck dealers sold 140,435 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds, up 19% from the corresponding period of 2009.

Sales of light-duty trucks (GVW ratings of 10,000 pounds or less) were even stronger in May versus a year ago, with Class 3 up 52%.

Total sales were up 24% compared to May 2009 and up 19% for the year.
