Medium and Heavy Truck Sales Up 30% in May

Medium and heavy truck sales were up 30% in May over the same period a year ago and up 6% from last month, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 40,570 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, up from May 2010 (31,285) and from April 2011 (38,116).

Compared with May 2010, Class 8 trucks were up 68% (13,290, compared to 7,895). Class 7 sales were 3,420, up 29% from the 2,647 sold.

For the year, truck dealers have sold 182,648 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds, up 30% from 140,435 in 2010. Class 8 sales have been 57,421, a 42% increase from the same period last year (40,361). Class 7 sales have been up 14% (16,964, compared to 14,923). Total sales of all classes have been up 15%, from 2,373,171 to 2,733,354.

Every class has been up, except for Class 4 (down 49%). The biggest increase has been in Class 5 (66%).
