Feb 10, 2010 1:42 PM

Medium and heavy truck sales were up 4% in January over the same period a year ago, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications.

Dealers sold 23,980 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, up from January 2009 (23,062) and down 37% over December 2009 (36,066), which was inflated by the pre-buy in advance of 2010 emissions.

Compared with January 2009, Class 8 trucks were up by less than 1% (7,387, compared to 7,374). Class 7 sales were 3,078, up 5% on the 2,933 sold in January 2009.

Only two classes were down compared to January 2009: Class (23%) and Class 2 (6%). Class 5 and 6 experienced the largest gain (15%).
