Crimson Fire Receives $11 million contract to Build Pumpers

Jul 24, 2008 4:13 PM

Crimson Fire, Inc. a Brandon, S.D.-based manufacturer of custom fire trucks and other rescue vehicles and a subsidiary of Spartan Motors, Inc., has been selected by Montgomery County (Maryland) Fire and Rescue Service to build 36 multi-function pumpers.

The pumps on each vehicle are computer- controlled and automated, making them easy to operate and ensuring consistent foam delivery. They are equipped with a Hale CAFSPro compressed air foam system, a leading-edge technology that delivers superior firefighting power.

The contract, which is valued at more than $11.2 million to Crimson Fire, will allow the organization to replace a significant portion of the fleet that serves the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

"Crimson Fire was the successful awardee in a competitive process initiated in March of this year to complete work on at least 36 fire department pumpers," noted Fire Chief Tom Carr. "This is the next step in our efforts to procure front-line vehicles to carry the all-hazard mission of the department into the future.

"Within the next year or so, every first-due engine company will be operating with a full-featured, precisely equipped unit with the latest technologies available to assure the safety of the crew cab occupants while entering, exiting and riding in the vehicles."

The new fire apparatus, which will all be identical, will utilize previously purchased Spartan Gladiator LFD cab and chassis with extreme duty interiors. The Crimson SE body will utilize an exclusive heavy-duty tubular construction to provide long-lasting durability and improved strength.

They will be engineered with the latest generation of solid-modeling software to ensure strict compliance with fire department specifications. The compressed air foam pumpers have a capacity of 1,500 gallons per minute and will feature:

  • 2007 emissions compliant Cummins ISM 400 hp engine
  • Heavy-duty Allison 4000 series transmission
  • Crimson custom SE series body with tubular aluminum construction
  • A Hale Q-Max pump equipped with a Hale CAFSPro compressed air foam system
  • A 750-gallon water tank with dual 25-gallon foam tanks
  • Onan 7.5 kw diesel generator
  • Multiple pre-connects, dual supply beds, wagon pipe and a pre-connected blitz-fire portable master stream
