Class 8 Used Truck Sales Beat Expectations in April: ACT

Total reported volumes of used Class 8 trucks inched to 2,806 units in April, virtually unchanged month-over-month, but up 1% year-to-date, according to the latest release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks, published by ACT Research.

“The strength came solely on the backs of retail dealers, who added 5% m/m,” said Steve Tam, Vice President-Commercial Vehicle Sector with ACT. “Auctions and wholesale transactions both sagged, losing 16% and 8%, respectively.”

Equivalent miles and a slight reduction in age were all that were needed to resurrect price appreciation, which faltered in March. Prices rose 2% m/m, to a new record of $49,800 in April.

The report from ACT provides data on the average selling price, miles, and age based on a sample of industry data. In addition the report provides the average selling price for top-selling Class 8 models for each of the major truck OEMs–Freightliner (Daimler); Kenworth and Peterbilt (Paccar); International (Navistar); and Volvo and Mack (Volvo).
