During October, prices were up 6.6% from September on the overall Class 4-8 commercial truck market, which was the largest month-over-month change since June. The heavy-duty resale pricing was up 9.4% over September. Medium-duty resale prices were up slightly lower at 7.9% month over month.

There were a few shifts in volume and market share of size class and model years causing a smaller overall price change than medium- and heavy-duty trucks individually. Resale volume was down 18.4% from September for all medium-  and heavy-duty trucks. The auction market saw similar trends with prices up and volume down between September and October. Auction prices were up 21.0% over the last month, which was the largest month-over-month change on the auction market since March and also the highest average prices in four months.

The price increases were primarily due to a strong month for heavy-duty trucks as prices were up 24.5% over September. The medium-duty market however did not see an increase in pricing as prices were down significantly month over month. Auction volume was down greatly overall for the month as well.

Comparing the Q3 average prices to the first month of Q4, resale prices are already 4.6% above the Q3 average prices. Heavy-duty prices were up 5.6% and medium up 6.6% over Q3 averages. Looking at the monthly average volume during Q3, October was down 12.9%. This has been the case for Q3 averages versus October for the past two years as well so it is a recurring trend.

Both resale prices and volume were up in October compared to both 2014 and 2013 numbers. Prices were up 7.6% from October 2014 and 10.9% from 2013. Volume was a bit lower during October 2014 resulting in resale volume up 25.0% year over year and up 14.0% from October 2013. Heavy-duty resale prices were 5.0% above 2014 and 10.3% above the October 2013 averages. Medium-duty trucks saw even larger changes up 12.1% from 2014 and 18.8% from October 2013.
